Some people mistakenly believe that if they get a tan before the summer, or some other time when they will be in the sun a lot, that it will protect them from skin cancer and from sun burns.
There is no proof that having a base tan prevents you from getting burned or getting skin cancer. Even dark tans only provide as much protection as SPF (sun protection factor) 4 sunscreen.
No, getting a base tan actually adds to the total amount of UV radiation that damages your skin and adds to your risk of skin cancer.
