Sunburn

What is a sunburn?

Sunburn is an inflammatory redness caused by too much sun, particularly UV B rays.

A sunburn is a real burn just like that caused by heat or boiling water.

Small blood vessels in the skin dilate and increase the blood flow to the surface, making the skin red and painful. Sunburns usually start appearing shortly after over-exposure to the sun, and may subside after being indoors for a while and cooling down. These burns then reappear three to four hours later and can last up to 24 hours. Sunburns are usually at their worst around 24 hours after the exposure.

Cells in the outer layer of the skin are programmed to die after severe sun exposure. This happens during flaking and peeling of the skin after a bad sunburn.
