A tan is a sign of injury to your skin. The darkening of your skin colour represents your skin's efforts to prevent further damage after over-exposure to UV rays through the release of a brownish pigment (melanin)
Even a dark tan is only equivalent to an SPF (sun protection factor) of 4, so there is very little protection through this mechanism.
